Submitting your work

All Dawson students are invited to contribute by submitting their work to Subtext. Please make sure your submission follows our guidelines indicated below.

What type of work can you submit?

Subtext features a variety of student work. Here are our main categories:

Why should you submit?

Submitting to Subtext is a great opportunity to share your exemplary work to a broader audience and is a good experience to add when writing your CV or future scholarship applications. Overall, it’s a great way to get involved and get your name out there!

If your work is submitted by a teacher, you are automatically considered for publication in Subtext and can also win the Cheryl Simon Writing Award awarded at the Dawson Film Festival each semester.

How can you submit?

There are two ways to submit your work to Subtext. The first is by filling out the submission form available here

Please make sure your work adheres to our submissions guidelines when submitting.

Your work may also have been submitted by your teacher. Each semester, Cinema and Communication teachers will nominate exceptional student work for the Cheryl Simon Writing Award awarded at the Dawson Film Festival. Nominated work will automatically be considered for publication in Subtext.

What is the selection process?

Works submitted to Subtext via e-mail are reviewed by our editorial committee and faculty advisor. If your work has been selected, we will contact you to confirm publication within a reasonable delay.

Submission Guidelines

Ready to submit? Make sure your work fits these guidelines before sending it to us.

  • Your text should be formatted in Microsoft Word format, and your videos in MP4. All film titles should be in italics and followed by the director and date, e.g., Nosferatu (F.W. Murnau, 1922).  
  • Maximum length requirements are as follows: 1000 words for film reviews and festival reports, 1200 words for articles/essays, 10 minutes for video essays (must be in 1080p format, no 720p will be accepted)
  • For written work, make sure there are no contractions and it is MLA formatted. Sources must be cited.
  • If your work was submitted for a class, please mention what class it was for and the name of the instructor in your e-mail to us.
  • Any accompanying images should be included separately, in JPG or PNG format at a maximum size of 1000 pixels wide, 72 dpi resolution. Captions for images should be in MLA format.
  • Please submit a short author bio (50 words or so) when sending us your work by e-mail. It may be accompanied by a profile photo of your choice (optional). This bio will be featured on our site if your work gets selected.
